Misconstrued

As many of you know, I am a comic book nerd. Part of the unwritten law of the comic book nerd is that when a comic book movie comes out, you must see the very first showing. I have not followed this law as closely as I should if I want to keep my nerd status. However, I went to see Spiderman 3 last night at midnight for the first show. Aside from a thirty minute chunck right in the middle of the movie that was pointless and made me almost ashamed to be a fan, it was a good movie. But, there was one part that stood out among the rest. Eddie Brock, who would later become the villian known as Venom, has a falling out with Peter Parker (Spiderman). Brock is fired from his job and has lost everything he once took pride in. Frustrated and desperate, Brock goes to church to pray.  He gets down on his knees in front of a statue of Jesus and begins. He said: Father, I come to you humbled and humiliated with one request. Now at this point he’s teary eyed and I’m thinking he just might be a man after my own heart when he says: I want you to kill Peter Parker. It nearly broke my heart. Yes, I know that Spiderman is not real (but Batman is) and that that movie was entirely fictional. But how can someone misconstrue Christianity so badly? I know that in the real world people are making the same false assumptions. Jesus was not sent to Earth as a professional hitman. He was not sent to destroy, but to give life and hope. I guess we only have ourselves to blame. A Christian’s blemish goes much further in the eyes of an ignorant third party than a good deed. But let’s face it. We’re going to mess up, and unfortunately someone will probably be watching. So there’s only one thing to do. Get back up and hit the redo button. Jesus gave us that button. Hopefully we won’t have to use it too much, but it’s there. And once we don’t have to use it so much, people will notice. Let our misactions not be misconstrued, but our actions amplified and life changing. May our good deeds one day go further in the eyes of the ignorant third party.

For it seems to me that God has made an exhibit of us apostles, exposing us to view last sentenced to death. For we have become a spectacle to the world with both men and angels.  -1 Corinthians 4:9

  1. I liked the whole “redemption of Harry” subplot and the Sandman’s final scene. I’ve got over 1,000 comic books (mostly Marvel), so I am definitely enjoying some of the Marvel movies. I hear that Iron Man is coming soon, as well as another Hulk.

The prayer you mentioned by Brock–wow! I was caught off guard by that too. Good article.

  2. Well, I waited and no one else commented. I’M FIRST!
Mason, you have some great thoughts. Keep them rolling.

  3. Well, I just thought I was first. Clyde, you’re too quick for me!
