This past Sunday, my parents, sister, and myself traveled to Fort Smith to visit my grandpa and his wife. Fort Smith is a good two hours away, so the ride there and back can and does get a little boring. So I decided to bring some Acapella CDs along with some Lecrae. Lecrae is a Christian rapper who has been a blessing to my faith and my parents are middle aged white folk. This was going to be interesting. After we had gone through all of the Acapella music, all that’s left is Lecrae and his Jesus Muzik (that’s one of Lecrae’s songs). So I pull it out and say that I brought music from a Christian rapper. My dad says “Sure. Just understand that I don’t like rap.” I said I didn’t either but this is different. So I put the cd into the player and we started bumpin. Not really. About thirty seconds into it, my dad says he can’t understand a word he was saying. My mom said what little she could understand had good words. You old people are so funny. So was this just a funny story for a blog, or is there another meaning? Seeing my parents listen to a style of music that they completely resent just because it’s from a Christian was really cool. This was a perfect example of being open to what the Holy Spirit has to offer. Why can’t we always follow this example? Why do we close ourselves off from the blessings and oppurtunities that God so willingly puts in front of us? I don’t know. If you do, let me know. I’d like to find out.
Please, pray that as children of God and soldiers for Christ, we remain open to the task God wants to bless us with. And may we bless others through him when we do open up.
One of these days I’m going to download some of that rap, load it into my Music Editor software, and slow it down to a snail’s pace so I can hear the words. Of course, I could also get the liner lyrics from the CD! Good post Mason

I occasionally put ‘ol Lecrae in for my commute. It really get’s me rollin’. I wish I could have been in the car on that trip to see your dad’s reaction. My dad just can’t handle rap period.
